14 billion AMD project to modernize the irrigation system in Armenia
The government of Armenia is realizing an irrigation system modernization project in cooperation with the Eurasian Development bank.
The project is part of a long-term national program to restore and restructure the irrigation and drainage network in Armenia.
The total cost of the project is 14 billion AMD and is implemented in 10 communities in Armenia.
The initial stage of the project includes renovation works of the irrigation networks, that are currently ineffective and wasteful. The total length of these networks is 259 km. The budget allocated to these works is 8 billion AMD. The government of Armenia has reported 40-45% completion of this phase.
As per the confirmed plan, once the networks are all fixed, they will start replacing mechanical irrigation with gravity irrigation. An amount of 2 billion AMD will be allocated to these works. Another 4 billion AMD will be spent on the project of rehabilitation of the main and secondary canals.
The key expected outcomes of the project implementation are as follows:
- 11mln kW net energy saving,
- A decrease in the exploitation expenses by 300 mln AMD,
- An increase in irrigated land by 10,000 ha.
We’d like to remind you that the cultivation of the arable lands and the renovation works of the irrigation networks has been a strategic direction for the government of Armenia for the past few years. Last year 228,000 hectares of arable land were cultivated, with some 155,000 plots of irrigated land. A rural insurance program was implemented in 6 regions in 2020 and they will realize it nationwide in 2021.
